Hybrid Software Helix introduces SmartDFE Version 6, bringing GPU-native technology to the digital front end
Major new release introduces GPU-native RIP technology delivering up to 30× faster rendering on real-world customer files
Hybrid Software Helix, a leading developer of core technologies for industrial inkjet printing, today announces SmartDFE Version 6, a major new release of its award-winning digital front end platform for high-speed digital presses. Version 6 introduces GPU-native technologies alongside significant enhancements to color management, automation and operator workflows, laying the foundations for the next generation of digital front ends. SmartDFE provides print OEMs with a complete, market-proven software platform for building differentiated digital press solutions, from job creation and workflow through to RIP, screening and printhead drive electronics. Its modular architecture enables manufacturers to get to market faster while retaining the flexibility to customize and differentiate their own solutions.
Version 6 brings GPU-native processing to Harlequin Direct, SmartDFE’s high-performance RIP technology for rendering print jobs at press speed. Harlequin Direct can now be switched between a CPU-native or GPU-native RIP core, enabling press manufacturers to choose the mode that best meets the performance, system cost and application requirements of their press. The new GPU-native RIP runs the rendering pipeline directly on the GPU, rather than simply offloading selected operations, while retaining the proven rendering quality, APIs and workflow compatibility of Harlequin technology. In testing with a range of real-world variable data customer files, the GPU-native RIP has delivered rendering speeds 30 times faster than the CPU-native RIP.
Version 6 also introduces a completely redesigned Job Editor that uses GPU-native rendering for faster previews and thumbnails, delivering a more responsive operator experience even when working with complex PDF files.

SmartDFE Version 6 also delivers extensive improvements across the platform. These include enhanced spot color management and expanded color libraries, improved PrintFlat integration, broader support for 16-bit workflows, and significant OPC UA enhancements for automation and factory integration. Operators also benefit from faster application startup, improved queue management and search capabilities, together with numerous workflow and usability refinements.
