Reports to
VP Product and Services, Hybrid Software Helix
Preferred location
Cambridge, UK
About the role
The Tools team is like the pit crew in Formula 1 — essential to the performance and success of the whole operation. Our mission is to build the software tools that support, test, and enhance the SmartDFE platform.
In this role, you’ll contribute to:
- Performance monitoring tools that help us optimise speed and reliability
- AI-assisted training tools that improve automation and operator experience
- Configuration and validation tools that streamline deployment for our customers
You’ll also gain first-hand experience of how your tools perform in real-world use by engaging directly with developer requests and real customer scenarios. Our customers are software developers working for OEM printer manufacturers and independent software vendors (ISVs) who build print-related applications.
You’ll be collaborating with a highly technical community - people who understand code, performance, and precision - making this a fantastic environment for fast learning and professional growth. By validating your tools in live use and sharing example code with customers, you’ll strengthen both your technical and communication skills. It’s an exciting mix of tool building, testing, and hands-on development collaboration, where you’ll quickly see the impact of your work.
Key responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain high-quality internal tools using C#.
- Investigate issues and contribute to effective solutions that support the SmartDFE product.
- Help improve and evolve our toolset based on feedback and new requirements.
- Validate tools through real-world interactions with developer customers, ensuring reliability and usability.
- Collaborate with colleagues and external developers to share technical insights and provide code examples.
- Show ownership and accountability in delivering work to a high standard.
Essential skills and experience
- C# Skills - Some hands-on experience building applications (through study, personal projects, or work experience).
- Problem-Solving Mindset - Curious about how things work and motivated to find practical solutions.
- Adaptability - Comfortable working in a small team where you’ll learn new skills and take on varied tasks.
Nice to have
- Versatility - Some familiarity with other languages (e.g., C++), and an interest in learning new technologies as needed.
- AI Interest - Curiosity about AI and how it can enhance products and developer tools.
Personal attributes
We recruit primarily for attitude and mindset. The successful candidate will demonstrate::
- Ownership - You take initiative and feel responsible for the work you deliver.
- Accountability - You follow through on commitments and take pride in achieving results.
- Positivity - You stay constructive and solution-focused, even when things get tough.
- Team Spirit - You collaborate with patience and respect, contributing to shared success.
- Drive - You’re motivated to learn, improve, and make a real impact.
Why work for us?
Hybrid Software Helix is recognised for its innovation. We were recently honoured with the King’s Award for Enterprise: Innovation for our SmartDFE technology. We’re a company driven by engineering passion, always exploring what’s next.
A great example of this is The Shed, our dedicated space for experimentation. It’s where engineers come together to try out new technologies, work on personal projects, and build skills that may one day shape our products - but for now, are simply explored for fun.
This role offers a unique career path: starting with internal tools development, gaining real-world validation through collaboration with our developer community, and growing into a software engineer deeply embedded in the world of digital print technology. You’ll be surrounded by experienced developers and engineers, learning from some of the best in the industry while continuously sharpening your own skills.
